~*~ Ubliet ShiAbbey  ~*~

"Ubliet", often referred to as a "dungeon" but were also used as hiding places. If you think of the hidden rooms and cellars used for the fleeing slaves of the Underground Railroad, you have some idea of these used in England and Europe. The word is French for "place of forgetting" and in some places, fleeing Catholic priests hid there from murdering Protestants. Our ubliet is also a place to hide in anonymity while being part of a spiritual movement...  not a torture chamber.

I well remember back in the 1970s going to the Houses of parliament to lobby a Welsh MP, who was proposing to get the old Witchcraft Act back on the Statute Book, after some silly posturing on TV by our old friend Alex Sanders. The MP and his wife, proved to be very nice people and gave me tea in the tearoom of the "House of Commons". I do not know what sort of person they expected to meet, but after I had talked to them and explained what present day witchcraft was really all about, I am glad to say that the proposed ban on witchcraft never materialized. I remember too, telling the representatives of the media who questioned me about my visit, that witches would consider going to "International Court of Justice" to claim our civil rights, if such a ban ever again did become law in this country.   ...National Conference of the Pagan Federation, Nov. 22, 1997

By John Law (1671-1729)

For your thoughts become your words.
Be careful of your words
For your words become your actions.
Be careful of your actions
For your actions become your habits.
Be careful of your habits
For your habits become your character.
Be careful of your character
For your character becomes your destiny.

Of course that is not the whole story, but that is the way with stories; we make them what we will. It's a way of explaining the universe while leaving the universe unexplained, it's a way of keeping it all alive, not boxing it into time.

We are taught you must blame your father,
your sisters, your brothers, the school,
the teachers -- you can blame anyone,

It's never your fault.

But it's always your fault,

you're the one who has got to change.
It's as simple as that, isn't it?

My mother drew a distinction between achievement and success. She said that achievement is the knowledge that you studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others, and that's nice, too. but not as important or satisfying. Always aim for achievement and forget about success.

The failure of women to produce genius of the first rank in most of the supreme forms of human effort has been used to block the way of all women of talent and ambition for intellectual achievement in a manner that would be amusingly absurd were it not so monstrously unjust and socially harmful.

I am also very proud to be a liberal. Why is that so terrible these days? The liberals were liberators-- they fought slavery, fought for women to have the right to vote, fought against Hitler, Stalin, fought to end segregation, fought to end apartheid. Liberals put an end to child labor and they gave us the five day work week! What's to be ashamed of?
